Quilting in a small space

I guess the right way to go about creating a quilt would be to have a plan, or a sketch, or to roughly lay out all the pieces of fabric first to get a feel for the overall picture, and what the quilt would look like. However, I live in a tiny cottage (45m2 to be exact) with no space to really design and fiddle, change things around, let it brew or stew (incubate if you will), go back the next day, or the day after, and fiddle some more before I start stitching. So I thought it might be a good idea (and interesting experiment) to start at one end and roll up or fold away the finished parts to make way for the next small area to work on. My available space for this is about 1000x600mm.

The concept of having to imagine how the different sections will go together, is exciting. I like the element of surprise. And so I started and worked this way for the past three weeks, trying to keep the layout in my head. But I’m thinking I might have to lay it out on the bed, to at least get a bit of a bigger picture. Leaving it to fate might be a bit too daring, especially since it is so much work to create a hand stitched quilt. And my curiosity and impatience already got the better of me. So I will from time to time throw it open over the bed (or outside if the weather allows, which seems to be never with our weather of late. If it’s not raining, the wind blows a gale), and adjust where needed so that I might get a more coherent piece.

Progress is slow, but stitch for stitch, it will be done.
